ARM launches second-gen Armv9 CPUs

ARM says the second-gen Armv9 CPUs will bring tangible benefits in terms of performance, computing, and software. “Our latest CPU clusters enable scalability in multiple power, performance, and area vectors across a broad range of next-generation devices,” the company states. It is claiming exceptional sustained performance and efficiency. The Cortex-X3 will take over the realms of flagship CPU cores from last year’s Cortex-X2. ARM is touting a 25 percent increase in performance this year. The company also claims that the new CPU delivers a 34 percent higher single-threaded performance compared latest “mainstream” laptops. This comparison is with an Intel Core i7 1260p, and not Cortex-X1 or X2 (via). The latest ARM flagship CPU will bring improvements to power consumption as well. But ARM didn’t share any specific figures regarding this. It did show a graph comparing the power consumption of Cortex-X3 and Cortex-X2 CPUs, though.

Coming to the Cortex-A715, which succeeds last year’s Cortex-A710, ARM says the new solution doubles down on its efforts for ultimate efficient performance. It consumes 20 percent less power for the same performance. And if power consumption is kept constant, you will get a five percent higher performance. The company claims that the Cortex-A715 can deliver the same performance as Cortex-X1, its two-year-old flagship CPU. It is 64-bit only, though. The Cortex-A710 offered 32-bit support. ARM hasn’t introduced a successor to the Cortex-A510 efficiency CPU core this year. But it claims to have made “important updates” to last year’s solution for superior power efficiency. The updated CPU brings a five percent power reduction. It also offers optional 32-bit support. The original solution was 64-bit only. Last but not least, ARM has updated its DSU-110 to support 50 percent more cores. It can now handle up to 12 cores and 16M L3 cache. This enables scalability, allowing customers to use the Cortex-X3 CPUs across a wide range of devices, including smartphones, laptops, desktops, TVs, and more.

New CPUs will power next-gen flagship SoCs

The latest CPUs from ARM should power the next-gen flagship processors from Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek. These processors, which we expect to be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Exynos 2300, and Dimensity 9100/Dimensity 10000, respectively, will arrive towards the end of 2022 or early next year. But early details about them have already started surfacing online. Over the next few months, we expect to hear more about them. We will keep you posted accordingly.
